Education/Licensing Requirements for Funeral Directing

Academic Requirements
In general, an individual must complete a course
of collegiate-level study in funeral service:
- consisting of at least 60 semester credits
or 90 quarter credits and
- in an institution(s) approved by the NYS Department
of Health or approved by a recognized accrediting agency.
The course of study
shall consist of the following curriculum:

Examinations
1. Funeral Directing
Examination
In order to obtain funeral directing licensure,
an applicant shall pass a funeral directing examination prepared
or approved by the NYS Department of Health to determine applicant's
knowledge and fitness. (Applicants must submit satisfactory evidence
of good moral character to
the Department.) An applicant may sit for the examination
only after satisfactorily completing the academic requirements.
2. NYS Laws Examination
In addition to the funeral directing examination,
an applicant for licensure must pass an examination on NYS laws,
rules and regulations relating to funeral directing that is prepared
or approved by the Department.
